About Gold Finger PCB
Gold fingers are the plated contacts along the edge of a board that plug into a slot connector, as on memory modules and expansion cards. They use hard (electroplated) gold over nickel, which resists wear far better than immersion gold, so the contacts survive repeated insertion.
The board edge is usually bevelled to ease insertion. We supply gold-finger boards including 8-layer HDI boards with impedance control and 6-layer TG170 designs.
Typical applications
- Memory modules
- Expansion and interface cards
- Test, burn-in and interface boards
- Plug-in modules and cartridges
- Backplane cards
Common questions
How thick is the gold on gold fingers?
A common specification is about 0.8 µm (30 µin) of hard gold over nickel, increased for parts that must survive many insertion cycles. State your requirement on the fabrication drawing.
Can gold fingers be combined with another surface finish?
Yes. The fingers are hard-gold plated, and the rest of the board can use HASL, immersion gold or OSP.
